Dear member,
as a current member, your membership has contributed to the events and activities of HPF and supported our mission of fostering park stewardship through volunteering, preserving park history, improving park amenities and safety, and sponsoring events and programming for education and enjoyment of Humboldt Park.
We are proud of our accomplishments of 2017. Your interest in the preservation of the park and its many contributions to the quality of life is appreciated.
The following are highlights of programs and events hosted by HPF.
Accomplishments of 2017:
Bathroom Renovations
Horray!! – bathroom renovations in the pavilion completed; thanks to the financial support Beer Garden Maintenance Fund, Milwaukee County Park’s Amenities’ Fund, Humboldt Park Friends and St. Francis Brewery along with the community support to our Face Book donation request.
Easter Egg Hunt
an annual event for over 18 years; proudly remaining one of the only free egg hunt events in the park system. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, your membership dues, and volunteers, we expanded the event that resulted in greater fun and enjoyment for kids and parents:
- increased the number of eggs to almost 6000;
- a secured stroller/bike check-in;
- 2 drawings one for kids and one for parents;
- hunt areas cordoned off by age allowing the for equal chance of collecting eggs;
- a food drive for the Bay View Community Center.
Corn Roast
Who does like grilled /roasted corn.?? The annual Humboldt Park Corn Roast was held on Tuesday, August 8th, during Chill on the Hill. Our corn was $2 per ear. The Bay View neighborhood Landmark Credit Union and Pick and Save generously donated all corn for this special event. Proceeds will support Humboldt Park Watch programming including our Easter Egg Hunt and Tree Day.
Bocce Benefit for Humboldt Park Friends
Thank You to all attendees of Avalon Theater’s Bocce Benefit for Humboldt Park Friends. With your support, we raised $1,574! The winning teams were:
1st Place: Club Garibaldi
2nd Place: Pass The Bocce To The Left Hand Side
3rd Place: Deboccery
The most spirited team award goes to Shiny Disco Balls.
Tree Day
Tree Day Program, annual educational environmental program for Bay View area first grade students; hosted by Humboldt Park Friends and Milwaukee County Parks. The schools that participated this year are Trowbridge, Humboldt Park, Parkside and St. Lucas, approximately 200 students participated in Tree Day .
Program includes a nature hike through Humboldt Park, participating in a planting of a tree; leafing rubbing, story time and button making. Students are excited to watch the tree planting process. Milwaukee County Parks planted four hardwood trees this year; students not only watch the planting of the trees but also participate in the planting by “feeding” each tree with their names written on paper and tossed into the hole prior to planting.
Lagoon Restoration project
Developed online survey for broad community input the future of the lagoon – current likes, dislikes; how is the lagoon utilized; name wish list of future amenities; suggest events and programs; what should be done to preserve the lagoon
Held community Listening Sessions on the lagoon
Continued the pilot cattail removal and invasive species removal
