Our newest Humboldt Park Hero is Greg Stilin, a long-time Bay View resident and great friend of the park. If you have enjoyed ice skating or hockey on the Humboldt Park lagoon, it is because of Greg. Greg monitors the ice thickness at the beginning of every skating season and coordinates with the parks department to open the lagoon for skating.
He has organized and led a small team that has been taking care of the lagoon ice for several years and his hard work and diligence resulted in an innovative system to prepare the ice surface – including his own version of a Zamboni machine. On any day in the winter, you may also see Greg snow blowing, coordinating ice maintenance, or pushing the wooden ice grooming tools back and forth across the lagoon to create an impressive expanse of clean ice for hockey and skating. This year, Greg and his team also groomed a path that loops around the island, which has been a favorite for skaters. Greg also monitors the ice and updates Humboldt Park Friends so we can post lagoon ice conditions.
We are thankful to Greg for his efforts that allow the lagoon to be enjoyed by so many friends and families during the winter. Greg is an important part of the park and the community, and we want to thank him for his contributions. He is truly a Humboldt Park Hero.
